Skip-the-Line Program: Effortless Driver’s License Requests and Faster DMV Procedures in Illinois

The new program to request a driver’s license in Illinois will facilitate the request for this document and will reduce the time to do this and other procedures, according to the Secretary of State.

The Skip-the-line program will improve customer service and wait times at Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias reported Thursday. .

To obtain a driver’s license in Illinois, an appointment will be requested and then go to some of the 44 busiest offices in the state.

This same requirement must be requested in advance to process the REAL ID, identification card services and for driving tests.

However, with Skip-the-line, now people requesting vehicle-related services, such as title and registration processing or license plate decal renewal, won’t need to make an appointment and can simply walk in to anyone of the facilities. The program will work from September 1st.

WHAT IS THE TEST LIKE TO OBTAIN A DRIVER’S LICENSE?

To obtain a driver’s license, it is necessary to pass the tests required by the state of Illinois, both practical and written, which certify that the person applying for the permit is qualified as a responsible driver.

One of the main objectives with these tests is to certify that the applicant knows and understands the rules of the road for driving, what they should and should not do on the road, as well as their responsibility behind the wheel.

The theoretical exam includes 35 questions, of which 15 focus on identifying traffic signs, and the remaining 20 will be multiple-choice or true-false questions.

• Mortgage or installment loan documents

• Passport (valid in the US or abroad)

• Social Security Card

• DL/CLP/temporary ID card

• Permanent residence card or employment authorization

• US military service record

Illinois Governor JB. Pritzker signed a new law that will offer driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants in the state.

WHAT IS NEEDED TO GET AN UNDOCUMENTED DRIVING LICENSE

If the person applying for a license in Illinois lacks legal documents, they can apply for a temporary visitor’s driver’s license (TVDL).

When applying for the TVDL, you must sign a statement on the application stating that, at the time of application, you are not eligible for a social security card, according to the ILSOS page.

To request the TVDL you need to present an identification document such as a valid foreign passport or a consular registration.

Other documents that the state of Illinois accepts are:

• Driver’s certificate (high school driver’s education class)

• Court order

• Credit card

• A US federal, state or local government identification card

• Mortgage or installment loan agreement

• Valid driver’s license or identification card from another state

• Mexican electoral card

Likewise, the state of Illinois also requires a document of residence in Illinois of at least 12 months, some of which qualify are:

• Bank statement

• Rental agreement or property title, or a mortgage.

• Insurance policy (owner or tenant)

•Mail from an official federal, state, or municipal entity that includes the name and surname of the applicant, and the complete current address

Recently Illinois Governor JB. Pritzker signed the HB 3882 law that will allow the undocumented to obtain a standard driver’s license, which will serve as identification, starting in January 2024.
