Kjetil Jansrud (36) is retiring from alpine skiing at the end of the week. The 36-year-old Norwegian, Olympic champion in Sochi in 2014, has been one of the defining figures in the World Cup in recent years.
The descent from Kvitfjell on Saturday will be his last race, Jansrud announced via Instagram. “A number of considerations led to this decision,” he explained, adding: “It’s not easy to end something that you’ve done your whole life.”
Jansrud made his World Cup debut in 2003 in Wengen in slalom. He then celebrated his greatest successes in the speed disciplines with the Olympic victory in the Super-G in Sochi and the 2019 World Championship title in the downhill from Are. In the World Cup, where he has triumphed 23 times, he has won four small crystal globes – in 2015 in Downhill and in 2015, 2017 and 2018 in Super-G.
Surprise guest in Beijing
At major events, Jansrud achieved further podium finishes with two silver and two bronze medals at the Olympic Games and two silver medals at the World Championships. Jansrud would have liked to continue this series of successes that began in Vancouver in 2010 in Beijing. After suffering a serious knee injury in a fall at Beaver Creek in early December 2021, he reported back just before the final Winter Games. But he had to settle for 23rd place in the Super-G.
Jansrud said goodbye to social media a few days before his last days in all modesty: “In these difficult days, my resignation and this message seem meaningless. My thoughts are with the Ukrainian people. Stay strong!” (SDA)
