Paschke and Geiger disappoint

The New Year’s Eve competition in front of 8,000 spectators was disappointing for Pius Paschke and Karl Geiger, who placed third and fourth in the overall World Cup and landed at 127 and 122 meters respectively.

“All of the jumps weren’t good today,” said Geiger at Eurosport: “It’s difficult for me: I started slowly, didn’t apply any pressure and then it gets tough.”

The Oberstdorfer jumps in the knockout duel against Alex Insam from South Tyrol. Paschke faces the young Finn Kasperi Valto.

“My main problem is the speed – if you voluntarily shorten four hatches, it becomes difficult,” said Paschke: “I have to make sure I get faster. Then I don’t think I would be so far away.”

Meanwhile, Philipp Raimund (12./131.5 m) didn’t quite confirm his good performance at the start of the tour in Oberstdorf, when he came sixth. Stephan Leyhe (13./127.5 m) jumped within his abilities.

From the national group, Constantin Schmid (9th/132 m) shone as the second best German. The Oberaudorfer even led the rankings up to start number 49. “I’m surprised,” said the 24-year-old, who is currently not part of the German World Cup team, at Eurosport: “My form is stabilizing.”

Felix Hoffmann (24th/131 m), Martin Hamann (44th/124 m) and Luca Roth (48th/122 m) also qualified for the New Year’s competition. Former world champion Markus Eisenbichler will not be playing in the Four Hills Tournament due to performance reasons.

The Swiss Simon Ammann (119 m) came into the New Year’s competition in 46th place on his 25th tour participation. The Polish normal hill world champion Piotr Zyla (50th) also had to worry and only made it further because ski flying team world champion Domen Prevc (Slovenia) was disqualified after the suit check.
