Skenes cools off Milwaukee: Rookie pitches another gem in Buccaneers win

In another dominant performance, Paul Skenes struck out 11 in seven hitless innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0.

Rookie Skenes threw 99 pitches in his 11th major league start, 65 of which went for strikes. The All-Star right-hander walked one and lowered his ERA to a combined 1.90.

Colin Holderman replaced Skenes (6-0) and allowed a single to Jake Bauers for Milwaukee’s first hit. The Brewers loaded the bases in the eighth, but Holderman escaped the jam by striking out William Contreras.

Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth for his fourth save.

In Detroit, Riley Greene drove in three runs on three hits and Jack Flaherty pitched six brilliant innings to help the Tigers beat the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians 10-1 to win a four-game series.

Cleveland’s Bo Naylor homered in the third and Carson Kelly responded with his seventh homer of the year in the bottom of the game to restore Detroit’s three-run lead before the game turned into a blowout.

DANNY JANSEN and Spencer Horwitz each homered, Kevin Gausman pitched seven strong innings once morest his former team, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the San Francisco Giants 5-3.

Gausman (7-8) allowed two runs and six hits in a performance that included three strikeouts and no walks. He made his first start at Oracle Park since the 2020-21 season, when he was pitching with the Giants.

STARTER Justin Steele pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, Selya Suzuki hit three extra-base hits and drove in three runs, and the Chicago Cubs routed the Baltimore Orioles 8-0 to complete a three-game sweep.

Dansby Swanson homered for Chicago, which outscored the AL East leaders 21-2 and became the first team to sweep the Orioles since Tampa Bay did it in August 2021.

IN PHILADELPHIA, Brandon Marsh hit a home run and an RBI triple, Trea Turner had six homers in nine games, and the Phillies completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning 5-1.

Aaron Nola (11-4) struck out nine in six innings and Kyle Schwarber homered for Philadelphia, which had not swept the Dodgers since 2011. Los Angeles’ last sweep of Philadelphia was in 2008.—AP
