SK Hynix’s Custom DRAM Enhances Data Processing Speed for Apple’s Vision Pro Glasses

According to the “Korea Herald” report, SK Hynix has previously been exposed to provide custom DRAM for Apple’s new mixed reality (MR) glasses Vision Pro, and will be the sole supplier of the DRAM. According to industry insiders today, SK Hynix’s customized DRAM can help the glasses double the data processing speed. SK Hynix provided 1GB of custom DRAM this time, which will be used to support the R1 chip equipped with Vision Pro for high-speed data processing. The core computing power of Vision Pro is supported by Apple’s M2 chip, but the R1 chip will co-process data from sensors and lenses, specifically including 12 lenses, 6 microphones and 5 sensors. Data processed by the R1 chip will be used for head, eye, hand tracking and 3D mapping of the surrounding environment. The custom DRAM provided by SK Hynix increases the number of input and output pins by eight times to minimize latency, the source said. This type of DRAM is also known as Low Latency Wide IO. The new DRAM also appears to be designed using a special packaging method and connected to the R1 chipset as a single unit, experts said. Apple unveiled the Vision Pro for the first time at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in early June this year, and plans to officially launch it early next year. SK Hynix did not confirm the news of providing DRAM for Vision Pro, only saying that it “cannot disclose customer information.”
