In the case of a schoolboy who shot and seriously injured his teacher in a US elementary school, the boy’s mother was sentenced to prison. A court in the US state of Virginia imposed a 21-month prison sentence on Wednesday because, among other things, the woman lied regarding her marijuana consumption when purchasing the murder weapon, the Washington Post reported. The mid-20-year-old had previously pleaded guilty.

At the beginning of the year, the boy took the pistol to school in Newport News and shot his teacher in the chest. The 25-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries. No one was hurt except for her. According to the police, the teacher was able to get all of the students out of the classroom. She later sued the school for millions of dollars in damages in a civil lawsuit. The process is still ongoing.

The mother of the now seven-year-old boy is also accused by the public prosecutor of neglecting her child. Sentencing for this charge is expected in December. School incidents involving such young shooters are also rare in the United States. The events in Newport News underscore the ongoing threat of gun violence in schools across the United States.
