Six tips for your laptop to have a long life

Laptops have become an essential work tool for many Chileans, as well as a product that allows them to enjoy disconnection and entertainment during leisure time. This is why it is of the utmost importance to keep them in good condition and well cared for.

“Although modern computers have a great operating capacity and are very complete, in relation to those of previous years, their care must be much more meticulous, since all these technologies can be weakened by any type of dirt or virus that join the team”, explains Gabriel Bahamondes, Technical Marketing & PR Coordinator at Asus

Next, we give you some tips that can be very useful so that your PC has a longer useful life, working optimally and without any type of problem:

1) Correct ventilation: When using the equipment we have to use it somewhere where adequate ventilation is allowed, without covering its ducts. Only then, the components will continue to work optimally and we will not risk reducing the useful life of the notebook. Using your laptop in bed or in places where the fan is closed is detrimental to it and creates more problems.

2) Shut down and do not suspend if it is not going to be used in a short time once more: If the computer is not going to be used for a long time during the day, it is recommended to turn it off and not leave it in sleep mode. This is because if it is left in this state for a long time without turning it off, the memory may not reset properly. In this way, the user might have problems with the files that he was using when saving them or he might see that the PC starts to work slower. If the computer goes to sleep and is offline, it might eventually shut down and risk losing files that are not saved.

3) Antivirus Installation: These serve to protect the computer from any external threat. It is important to be attentive when using the equipment and not to download each one of the links that one finds on the network. To prevent these viruses from having negative effects on the notebook, you must keep your PC and Antivirus updated, so that it can detect any problem. Windows Defender is an antivirus built into Windows that allows you to consume fewer resources to protect your computer, but it’s important to keep it activated and keep Windows Update up to date

4) External and internal cleaning: A very important factor to consider in order to ensure that the equipment has a long useful life is that of cleanliness. This does not have to be only on the outside, but it must be done throughout the notebook. It is very important to wipe both the keyboard and the screen, since you have to remove the dust that manages to reduce the operation of the equipment. It is also important that the different inputs and ports are cleaned correctly, so that they continue to work properly (Avoid any type of object from getting stuck inside, which harms the PC’s load, as well as the input of any device). In the event that periodic maintenance is planned inside the equipment, it is recommended that it be done through technical services authorized by the brand, to avoid internal damage to the PC.

5) Correct use of the battery: To protect the useful life of the batteries, we must bear in mind that it is not good to have it always charged at 100% of its capacity. What is recommended is to use the charge periodically, thus achieving that the battery lowers its charge to at least 20%-30% (There are different theories to what level it should drop) and then reconnect it so that it is fully charged once more . Also keep in mind that it is detrimental to the computer to let the battery discharge completely and leave it for a long time in that state. One option to avoid having to unload the equipment is to make use of the utilities that some equipment includes to limit the battery charge level, for example, in MyASUS you can limit the charge to up to 80% or 60% depending on the type of PC use.

6) Do not eat or drink anything on top of the equipment: Without a doubt, one of the most important points to consider. When you eat or drink something on top of the notebook, you run the risk of spilling on it, once this happens it can be very serious for the operation of the equipment. This is because what falls is directly in contact with the components that make our computer work, such as the processor. If it takes damage, gets wet, or gets too dirty, it won’t work as well or will stop working altogether.
