Books – Sayed Metwally
It is not uncommon to have a problem with your teeth or mouth. Tooth pain or sores are problems that can often be easily solved with a visit to the dentist or treatments available without a prescription from a pharmacist.
For this reason, it is always useful to have regular dental check-ups, to ensure that any such problem is resolved quickly and does not worsen.
However, sometimes these problems may be a sign of something more serious, and one expert revealed that some symptoms in the mouth might actually be signs of cancer, according to Express.
Oral cancer, known as the silent killer, usually causes symptoms that affect the mouth, tongue, throat and neck.
Dentist Dr Firakh Hamed, from Aesthetique Dental Care in Leeds, shared six of these symptoms to watch out for.
These include:
Feeling of thickening in the throat
Voice changes or hoarseness
Swollen lymph nodes
Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking
Numbness in your mouth
Loose teeth without dental problems.
Feeling of thickening in the throat
Many people may not immediately associate the constant feeling of something in their throat with oral health problems.
However, this might be an early warning sign of oral cancer, according to Dr. Hamed.
“It’s important to listen to your body,” he said. “If swallowing feels different or if you notice persistent throat discomfort, it may be time to consult a dentist.”
Voice changes or hoarseness
Changes in your voice, such as hoarseness, can be more than just an annoyance or a symptom of the common cold.
He continued: “If you notice persistent changes in your voice, especially if you have trouble speaking loudly or clearly, this might be a sign of something more serious.”
“Do not ignore these symptoms; Getting an evaluation is key.”
Swollen lymph nodes
Swollen lymph nodes, especially in the neck, can be an indicator of various health conditions, including oral cancer.
“If you notice a swelling or lump in your neck that persists or grows, it is essential to seek medical attention immediately,” he said.
“Early detection can greatly impact the success of treatment.”
Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking
Having difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking not only disrupts daily life, but may also be a sign of oral cancer.
Dr. Hamed said: “These symptoms should not be overlooked, especially if they persist or worsen over time. It is important to treat these signs by consulting a healthcare professional.”
Numbness in your mouth
Numbness or unusual sensations in the mouth, lips, or tongue, especially when persistent or accompanied by discoloration, can be warning signs of oral cancer.
Dr. Hamed said: “These are not normal changes, and should not be ignored. Your health care provider can help determine the cause and necessary next steps.”
Loose teeth without dental problems
Teeth that become loose for no apparent reason can be a ‘worrying concern’.
He added: “If you are experiencing this along with other symptoms, it might be a sign of something more serious, such as mouth cancer.
“It is important to report these changes to your dentist or health care professional as soon as possible.”
Cancer Research UK also lists the symptoms of mouth cancer as:
– Sores that do not heal
Pain in your mouth
Red or white spots in the mouth or throat
Difficulty swallowing
Speech problems
A lump in your neck
Weight loss
Bad breath.
If you experience any unexplained symptoms, you should speak to a doctor as soon as possible.
