Six shot dead in nursing home in Croatia

A man made his way into the nursing home and started shooting around, the newspaper writes Join us. Among the dead are five residents of the nursing home and one employee. Five people were killed on the spot, while one died in hospital following the shooting. Another six people are injured, according to the police.

Several media outlets write that the perpetrator first ran from the scene, but that he was arrested a short time later at a nearby cafe. The police say that the man is “under police surveillance”, without going into more detail about what this entails.

The police have not yet said anything about what the motive behind the act might be.

The local television station N1 says that the alleged perpetrator was born in 1973 and that he fought in the war in Croatia in the period 1991-1995. According to local media, one of the residents killed is his mother, who had lived at the home for the past ten years.

Croatian President Zoran Milanovic says the incident shows that there is a need for stricter control of gun ownership in the country. The man is said to have used a weapon that was not registered. There are many weapons in private homes in Croatia since the war of independence in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

Daruvar is a spa town in the municipality of Slavonia, a place with 8,500 inhabitants.
