The Minister of Education spoke regarding the new measures once morest intra-school violence, Kyriakos Pierrakakisemphasizing that in the first 12 hours, that the platform is operating, we had 6 reports of incidents of school violence.
Explaining the way complaints are handled, Mr. Pierrakakis clarified that first the report is made to the school and if it is serious it goes to the education directorate, where the guidelines are given.
“There is no punitive mood. The ministry does not have abortions”, he said and added: “We give tools and teachers based on guidelines decide how to use them. Mobile phones are linked to bullying and we need to protect children, especially in cases where there is video recording of very private moments. There the abuser will change schools”, he said and added: “It is the absolute red line”.
When asked if children can take cell phones to school, he said that this is an issue that needs to be looked at as a whole, as they are typically prohibited and that’s why the framework was put in place. “If there is video recording, the director can decide on a penalty of expulsion depending on the incident,” he explained.
In the reinstatement of the five-day suspension, Mr. Pierrakakis argued that most teachers “ask for this measure as a tool”.
He also emphasized that from September there will be new school operating regulations, which each parent will sign as a basic condition for their child to be enrolled.
