Contrary to initial information, the 33-year-old had not previously caused a traffic accident, but had noticed a patrol because of his conspicuous driving style. However, attempts by the police to stop him failed. The man from Salzburg ignored all the stop signs and drove away at excessive speed.
A few hundred meters further on, a bicycle courier tried to stop the handlebars by standing in his way. However, the 33-year-old just kept driving. The cyclist jumped to the side and his bike was hit by the man’s car. The man from Salzburg fled unimpressed and drove along the Salzachgässchen, the cycle path on the banks of the Salzach and the Müllnersteg – all of which are often very busy walking and cycling routes in the old town – to the other side of the Salzach and finally through the Mirabell Gardens.

On the way, pedestrians and cyclists might sometimes only get to safety by jumping to the side or by dodging into the bushes. One person suffered minor injuries from the jump. Several poster stands and bollards were also damaged.
Finally, the driver was able to be stopped by a collision with a patrol car in Schrannengasse, which he was driving once morest the one-way street. Two police officers were injured in the process, and the Salzburger injured four other officers during the subsequent arrest. As the police spokeswoman said to the APA, the man seemed impaired – but more detailed investigations are necessary here. The 33-year-old was taken to the police detention center and faces criminal and administrative consequences.
