According to the weekly epidemiological surveillance report of the EODY, out of a total of 7 people who have contracted the West Nile virus this summer following being bitten by a mosquito, five showed more severe symptoms from the Central Nervous System (CNS) and specifically, encephalitis and/or meningitis, and/or acute flaccid paralysis).

Two people had to be treated in hospitals in Thessaly and Macedonia, but fortunately outside the ICU. The remaining 2 patients had extremely mild symptoms, while no deaths have occurred so far.

EODY scientists stress that the diagnosis of many more cases is expected in the coming period.

The first case in Greece was detected two weeks ago, at the beginning of the month, while no West Nile virus infection was reported last week.

Another imported case was recorded in the previous period, from a person infected by a mosquito bite in a foreign country.

The 6 new incidents were detected in the Regional Units of Larissa, Lefkada, Halkidiki and in the Metropolitan Unit of Thessaloniki. In particular, in the municipalities of Larissa, Kilelere, Agia, Lagada, Aristotle and Lefkada.
