A long-term study conducted by scientists from Oxford identified six main factors that contribute to the development of dementia.

According to a report in the journal Nature Human Behavior, researchers monitored the health of 350,000 participants for more than 15 years.

This made it possible to identify the following main causes of this neurodegenerative disease:

  • Diseases that have occurred in a person throughout his life. In particular, dementia is most often caused by cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension and infections.
  • A lifestyle characterized by insufficient physical activity, poor diet, alcohol and tobacco use, and low levels of participation in cognitive activities and social contacts.
  • Physical indicators such as excess weight, elevated cholesterol and changes in blood pressure.
  • Socioeconomic status, including low levels of education, limited access to health care, and poor living conditions.
  • Psychological factors such as constant stress, frequent episodes of depression and insufficient social support.
  • Environment, including harsh climatic conditions, air pollution, harmful chemicals in the atmosphere, soil and water, and high noise levels.
