Earlier this week, when the new rules came into force, three same-sex couples and three heterosexual couples registered their partnerships, LETA reports.
On July 1, a new legal institution came into force in Latvia – partnership. All couples, including same-sex couples, can now register their relationship in accordance with the new law.
The first to take advantage of this opportunity were Jānis and Maksims, who registered their partnership just following midnight on July 1. They met in early 2019 and began living together at the end of that year. After registering their partnership with a notary, the couple took a walk through the center of Riga “to celebrate this historic event.” The couple was greeted by representatives of the “Dzīvesbiedri” movement and the Minister of Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere, under whose leadership the partnership regulations were developed.
The amendments to the Notary Act are part of a package of laws that provide for the possibility for two adults, of both opposite and same sex, to register their relationship with a notary. The registration of a partnership ensures legal, economic and social protection of the relationship between two people at the national level, as information regarding the partnership will be entered in the Register of Natural Persons.
Once a partnership is established, a partner will have the right to make decisions regarding the other partner’s medical treatment if he or she is unable to care for himself or herself or to freely express his or her will, receive social benefits such as the right to receive a pension calculated for the partner but not paid until his or her death, and receive tax benefits on mutual gifts and loans.
