Sitting too much is unhealthy – not just for the body, but also for the mind, as a recent study shows: People over 60 who sit for ten hours or more a day have an increased risk of dementia.
In the United States, according to a 2019 study, more than half of all adults spend 9.5 hours a day sitting, as well as 80 percent of their free time. Daily sitting times are also increasing in Europe, as a study from 2020 highlights. There is plenty of evidence that a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to, among other things, an increase in cardiovascular diseases and a shorter lifespan.
According to the researchers, people with office jobs in particular should remember to get enough exercise. However, more research is needed to determine whether there is actually a causal connection and whether dementia can be prevented with more physical activity.
