Sisi confirms to CIA chief Egypt’s position rejecting continued military operations in Gaza Strip

Egyptian presidential spokesman Counselor Ahmed Fahmy said that the meeting addressed regional developments, where the latest developments in the joint efforts to reach an agreement for calm and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip were discussed.

For his part, Sisi stressed in this regard the Egyptian position rejecting the continuation of military operations in the Strip, stressing the importance of the international community assuming its responsibilities to stop the war and ensure the implementation of relief aid, sufficient to truly alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe experienced by the Palestinians in the Strip.

The Egyptian President also stressed the need to take serious and effective steps to prevent the expansion of the conflict in the region, stressing the importance of implementing the two-state solution, within the framework of a just and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian issue.

The Director of the US Central Intelligence Agency appreciated the Egyptian efforts to cease fire and implement humanitarian aid, stressing his country’s appreciation for the wise and responsible Egyptian positions, which strongly push towards establishing peace, security and development, regionally and internationally.

It is worth noting that Israeli media confirmed that a high-level Israeli delegation, led by the head of the “Shabak” Ronen Bar, arrived in Cairo on Monday.

Walla correspondent Barak Ravid said that a tripartite meeting will be held in Cairo on Tuesday between senior Israeli and Egyptian officials, Biden’s envoy to the Middle East, Barack McGurk, and CIA Director William Burns.

According to the Rafid report, the two sides will discuss the hostage deal as well as arrangements for reopening the Rafah crossing and security arrangements that will prevent weapons from being smuggled to the factions’ movement from Egypt, according to four Israeli and American sources.

The Israeli newspaper Maariv reported that senior Israeli and American officials said that although this issue was not mentioned in the text of the hostage deal and ceasefire proposal, they want to find a solution to it through cooperation between the United States, Egypt and Israel in coordination with the security services.

According to Maariv, following the talks in Cairo, McGarrick is expected to arrive in Israel tomorrow and meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Galant.

Burns will continue on to Qatar to attend a four-way meeting in Doha on Wednesday regarding the hostage deal.

Burns will hold talks with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamal, and Mossad chief David Barnea.

The Ynet website reported that the head of the Mossad told the mediators that in order to move forward with the deal, the factions movement must agree to the broad outlines that were sent to them and approved by the Security Council and US President Joe Biden – and not make any changes to them.

Cairo is hosting consultations this week on the outstanding points regarding the ceasefire in the Strip.

The Associated Press quoted an official in the factions movement on Saturday as saying that the movement still wants “written guarantees” from the mediators that Israel will continue to negotiate a permanent cease-fire agreement once the first phase goes into effect, while Netanyahu insists that the war will not end until Israel achieves its goals of destroying Hamas’s military capabilities and ability to govern, and returning all Israeli prisoners held in Gaza.
