The Inter-American Press Association (SIP) published a statement regarding the situation of the Guatemalan journalist Jose Ruben Zamorawho served two years in prison as indicated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

In the SIP publication, it is indicated that the arrest of Zamora is due to retaliation for his information work and recounts part of the process that has faced.

“Zamora remains detained in the Mariscal Zavala military prison from July 29, 2022, in retaliation for his reporting workHe was sentenced in June 2023 to six years in prison for alleged crimes of money launderingin a trial marked by serious irregularities,” the publication notes.

The SIP publication quotes its president, Roberto Rock, who points out that the Guatemalan journalist has faced violations of its rights y cruel treatment during the judicial process.

The opinion of the president of the Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, Carlos Jornet, editorial director of the Argentine newspaper La Voz del Interior, is also highlighted.

“Zamora’s imprisonment is a sad example of the Misuse of justice to criminalize journalists and media in retaliation for their reporting,” said Jornet.

“Unfortunately this is a problem that the SIP has documented and reported in recent years in several countries in the region“, he said.

The SIP indicates that, in addition to the repeated calls to release Zamorafiled an “amicus curiae” brief in which he urged the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice to “resolver expeditiously the request for alternative measures to stop the continued violation of due process and the right to personal liberty” by Zamora.

Considers that “keep him in preventive detentionwithin a spurious process in which they have also been violated all fundamental rightsis unreasonable. Not knowing the request for review is a failure to comply with the duty to administer justice“.

It also explains that on May 15, 2024 a court granted Zamora Zamora was granted conditional release in one of the cases against him, but the measure was overturned on June 12 by the Second Chamber of the Court of Appeals. Zamora’s defense filed an appeal before the Chamber of Appeals of the Supreme Court of Justice.

Zamora remains in prison due to delays in the judicial process, which have caused accusations against judicial authorities.
