The Austrian Society of Otolaryngology said that sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the sinuses of the nose, explaining that it is due to several causes, most notably bacterial or viral infection.

The association explained that the causes also include allergies, respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and anatomical narrowing sites that impede sinus ventilation, such as the curvature of the nasal septum and large adenoids, in addition to smoking.

The symptoms of sinusitis are purulent secretions from the nose, complete obstruction of the nose, decreased sense of smell and taste, and bad breath from the mouth, in addition to headache, a feeling of pressure in the head, swelling of the nose, fever, and fatigue.

Sinusitis is treated with decongestants and mucus thinners. In the case of a bacterial infection, antibiotics are used. In the case of anatomical problems such as deformity of the nasal septum and large adenoids, surgery is used to correct the deformity or remove the polyps.
