World number one Jannik Sinner is on a roll towards his second grand slam title of the season after reaching the semi-finals of the 2024 US Open. The Italian advanced to the last four with a four-set win over 2021 champion and two-time runner-up Daniil Medvedev.
In the quarter-final match at Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York, Thursday (5/9) WIB, Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. After successfully becoming the champion of the Australian Open this year, Sinner is now the first Italian tennis player to advance to the semifinals of the US Open in the open tournament era.
Sinner successfully implemented various tactics to suppress Medvedev. He countered Medvedev’s return position with serve-and-volley, drop shots, and attacks aimed at every corner of the court. The longer the rally, the harder Sinner hit the ball.
“It was very difficult, we know each other very well,” Sinner was quoted as saying by ATP.
“We played in Australia this year and then London. We knew it was going to be very physical. The first two sets were strange because whoever got the first break started to run,” he added.
Medvedev struggled with his baseline game after 15 unforced errors in the opening set while Sinner dropped just one point early on.

In the second set, Medvedev played more aggressively on his return of serve to record five straight games and take the set.
However, Sinner managed to win the first five games of the third set and reduce the deficit. Sinner crucially saved two break points at 2-3 in the fourth set to eventually turn the match around.
“We’re trying to work really hard on that aspect of the game. I know I can improve a lot, especially going to the net,” Sinner said.

“I tried to serve-and-volley a few times, tried to mix things up. I’m really happy with the way I did it today and let’s see how I can face the next opponent,” he said.
The victory for Sinner brought back sweet memories of the 2024 Australian Open final and avenged his defeat to Medvedev in the Wimbledon quarter-finals two months ago.
Sinner is now the only seed remaining and will face Britain’s Jack Draper in the last four. The two have only met once before. Draper will be hoping to repeat his win over Sinner at the ATP 500 event The Queen’s Club in 2021. (Z-6)
