THE ESSENTIAL
- Stomach cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death worldwide.
- In the United States, approximately 11,000 deaths are linked to this pathology each year.
4.657. This is the number of new cases of stomach cancer diagnosed in metropolitan France in 2018, according to theNational Institute of Cancer. Among them, 65% of the patients were men. Were they married, divorced or single? This question is surprising, but the answer to this question might have an impact on the risk of developing stomach cancer and the chances of survival.
A better vital prognosis for married people
According to a recent study published in the journal Journal of Investigative Medicine, single people have a higher risk of suffering from stomach cancer compared to those in a couple. Another discovery by the researchers: married patients have a better prognosis for cancer survival than single or divorced people.
“Married people have more financial means. They can also receive emotional encouragement,” which affects the quality of life and the psychological support of sick patients, explains Aman Xu, one of the authors.
To arrive at this result, the scientists analyzed the medical data of 3,647 patients with stomach cancer in the United States diagnosed between 2010 and 2015. For all of them, the tumor was localized and had not spread further. other organs. Thus, they observed that married people had a 72% chance of surviving this pathology. In detail, women were at 76% and husbands at 69%. A much better percentage than widowers, at 51%, and widows, at 61%.
Lifestyle would have an impact on stomach cancer
Regardless of relationship status, researchers have observed that women generally survive stomach cancer longer than men. Scientists explain this difference between the sexes in part by genetics or “bad” lifestyle habits such as an unbalanced diet or a sedentary lifestyle. Nevertheless, the authors cannot precisely determine their impact because they did not study them in detail during their research.
In addition to personal aspects and sexual criteria, the authors also determined other factors, including the advanced stage of the cancer or the size of the tumor which, according to Professor Aman Xu, would be the main contributing factor to the risk of death or recurrence of stomach cancer.
