Simon Daniel is the reflection of his generation. Like many other young adults, the Moncton singer is very concerned regarding the environment.
So much so, that he doesn’t hesitate to say that he suffers from eco-anxiety.
His new extract, Hey meputs into words and music what he feels since the beginning of all these climatic episodes.
“This is a very important question for people of my generation. Sometimes I literally wake up in the night and it keeps me from sleeping. It’s a subject that comes to me,” he confides.
“It seems like it was there, but it was latent in the past. Lately, with all the extreme weather events that we have experienced in the last year, whether it be forest fires or floods, it is something that worries me a lot.
He admits that this song is a bit of a form of therapy for him.
“There’s a bit of a punk energy to this song: it has a lot of rhythm! It feels good to be able to let off some steam and let it all out.”
Eco-anxiety, however, is not something easy to control, mentions Simon Daniel.
“This is a problem that is broader than the individual. I can make as much effort as I want, but if collectively we do not take concrete actions, we will not move forward,” he declares.
“As an individual, we certainly feel a little helpless. When I wrote this album, we were just coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic and that too was a situation where we felt helpless.”
This feeling of helplessness is still present in him, but he points out that he is far from being the only one to experience this anxiety regarding the future.
“It kind of feels like it’s a time where we’re in limbo and all we can do is wait. That’s what’s difficult. This is the biggest societal problem facing my generation.
Simon Daniel will undertake his tour in October and November to present his new album Sans titre (for now).
He will be in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia to offer showcases to people in the music industry.
Several shows are also on the menu, including those in Kapuskasing, Ontario (November 3), Lévis, Quebec (November 10), Edmundston (November 22), Saint-Jean (November 23) and Moncton (November 24).
