Singer Sean (51, Korean name Noh Seung-hwan) overcame cramps in both thighs and succeeded in completing the full course (42.195 km) of the 2023 Chuncheon Marathon. His record was 3 hours, 37 minutes and 7 seconds. It fell far short of his goal of ‘sub-three’ (finishing the race in less than 3 hours). But he smiled and promised to donate to patients with Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Sean has been actively involved in donation activities through running. Ahead of this year’s Chuncheon Marathon, he said on social media, “I am challenging the Serve Three,” and “if successful, I will donate 1,000 won per meter, a total of 42,195,000 won, to the construction of Korea’s first Lou Gehrig Nursing Hospital, which will begin construction in November this year.” . At the amateur level, serving three is a record called a ‘dream record’. He has been preparing for the Chuncheon Marathon under the guidance of coach Kwon Eun-ju, a former marathon runner, and has consistently posted the process on his social media.
Sean passed the halfway mark in the Chuncheon Marathon on this day in 1 hour, 31 minutes and 21 seconds, and it looked like he might achieve a sub-three if he raised his pace just a little more. However, he began to feel discomfort in his right thigh muscles around the 25km mark, which eventually cramped around the 32km mark. He did not give up and controlled his pace by gradually slowing down his goal completion time, but his left thigh muscles also cramped when he felt the strain. Even with both his legs cramping alternately, he relaxed his muscles, started once more, and crossed the finish line. After completing the race, Sean said, “At the last moment, both my legs started cramping up,” and “It’s a shame I mightn’t come in in style.”
Although the serve three failed, Sean said, “I will make the donation I promised.” He plans to deliver his donation through the Seungil Hope Foundation, of which he is co-chairman.
This is Sean’s third time participating in the Chuncheon Marathon. In 2019, when he was competing for the first time, he ran and completed the race with Park Eun-chong (then 16 years old), who had an incurable disease such as ‘Sturge Weber Syndrome’ (a disease that causes atrophy of one side of the brain and paralysis of the body), in a wheelchair, and last year, he participated alone. . Sean said, “The Chuncheon Marathon is a very meaningful race to me.”
