Country music singer Ingrid Andress has been at the center of controversy following her performance of the national anthem at the 2024 Home Run Derby. The event was held on July 15 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Andress appeared noticeably impaired and later confirmed that she was under the influence of alcohol during the performance.
According to People, Andress took to her Instagram account to apologize and explain what happened. “I’m not going to lie, folks, I was drunk last night. I’m checking into a facility today to get the help I need. Last night was not like that,” the 32-year-old singer said. She also apologized to MLB, fans and the country for her performance, adding that she will update her progress in rehabilitation.
The incident sparked a swift reaction on social media. According to ABC News, Andress’ performance was compared to Fergie’s performance at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game, which also received numerous criticisms. Users on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, made sarcastic comments in reference to Andress’ performance. One user wrote: “Fergie watching Ingrid Andress claim her crown as the worst national anthem of all time.”

In a previous newsletter to her fans, the singer had addressed her emotional state and recent challenges. People reported that Andress mentioned experiencing “depression” and a personal disconnect. “I had to separate myself from some people who had helped me make a name for myself,” the artist confessed. She decided to return to her hometown in Colorado to regain her sense of identity and pride.
In addition to apologizing for the performance, Andress revealed a new single titled “Colorado,” which is scheduled for release on July 24. According to ABC News, Ingrid thanked her fans for their continued support and promised more announcements of future concerts.
The media outpouring also included supportive statements from several of Andress’ colleagues. Friends and music industry peers expressed their empathy and support in the comments on her Instagram post. Singer Carly Pearce commented: “Sending you love Ingrid. Being so open takes a lot of effort. You can do it. Cheer up.” Songwriter Julia Michaels added: “I love you girl. I’m sorry you’re going through this and I’m sorry the world can be so cruel. I’m here for you xx.”
The Associated Press reported that Andress began her career in Nashville as a songwriter, penning songs for artists across a range of genres including Bebe Rexha and Charli XCX. She signed with Warner Music Nashville and Atlantic Records, and released her debut album “Lady Like” in 2020, which included the single “More Hearts Than Mine,” which peaked at No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the chart for 20 weeks.

Andress’ rep has not issued any additional comment on the incident. In the meantime, the singer is preparing to enter rehab and remains grateful for the support of her colleagues and fans. The public reactions and critical comments on social media highlight the constant pressure and scrutiny that high-profile artists are under.
