Renate Holm died this Thursday (April 21) in Vienna at the age of 90. The Volksoper Wien announced this on its website. The soprano completed 461 performances in the house. “Even following the end of her career, she regularly attended our premieres and remained connected to the Volksoper as a viewer to the end,” said the opera. She made her debut there in 1957 as Helene in the premiere of “Ein Walzertraum” and moved to the Vienna State Opera in 1961.

She played the “Miss from Office”

She previously gained notoriety through appearances in films. These included roles in the music films “Große Starparade” (1954) and “Wunschkonzert” (1995) as well as in the comedy “Fräulein vom Amt” (1954). In it, Holm played the telephone operator Susi Behnke, who secretly takes singing lessons. Holm always remained true to opera, celebrated international success and also made a name for himself with operetta recordings and radio appearances. Later she also worked as a singing teacher.

Holm was born Renate Franke in Berlin in 1931. Even as a young girl, she wanted to be an opera singer, but first worked as a dental assistant to earn money for singing training. Her breakthrough came following she was successful in a singing competition.
