SINGAPORE (Archyde.com) – Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Thursday the country would abolish a legal provision that made sex between men illegal. The exact timing of the abolition is unknown. On the other hand, he said there is no policy to change the law to make marriage between a man and a woman.

The prime minister said gay acceptance is growing in Singapore society, especially among younger people. “I believe this measure is the right one and that most Singaporeans will now accept it,” he said.

While LGBTQ groups welcomed the removal of the colonial-era provision, they expressed concern that eliminating same-sex marriage might lead to continued discrimination.

LGBTQ groups have filed numerous lawsuits to repeal the provision, all of which have been dismissed.
