Sindh: Proposal to ban children from acting during teaching hours

The government of Pakistan’s Sindh province has prepared a special ordinance for children working in films and dramas, under which children will not be allowed to work during teaching hours.

According to the Sindh Children’s Drama Industry Ordinance 2024, artists below the age of 18 will not be allowed to work late at night, their safety will also be ensured and in case of any complaint, a committee can take action on it. will

Sindh Provincial Minister of Sports and Culture, Junaid Ali Shah, while discussing this matter, told Independent Urdu that not only children cannot be taken to work during school hours, but they cannot be photographed with them even late at night.

“This law will apply to all forms of performance, including drama, film, theatre, advertising, because we don’t want to correct children’s distortions and anything outside of education is important.”

Junaid Ali Shah said that although he had not received any formal complaint in this regard, but because he himself had seen in the Ramadan broadcast, how children are brought there and made to sit for a long time, so he This step was taken.

“I consulted Adnan Siddiqui, Humayun Saeed and Irfan Malik in this regard and it was only with their support that this was possible, especially Adnan Siddiqui who gave a lot of time and help.”

In connection with the implementation of this ordinance, he said that a committee headed by a secretary of the culture department will be established in which the Sindh Child Protection Bureau and other law enforcement agencies will also be represented so that any complaint If it comes, it can be processed.

“Awareness is very important for implementation, because when people don’t know what the law is, how are they going to follow it.”

He further said that most artists suffer from financial difficulties and ask for help from the government, so it is important that even if some of these children become artists, they should be educated so that they can earn a job because everyone Being a star does not earn a lot of money.

He further said that now in this ordinance, the provision of keeping the safety of children in the places or areas where shooting is taking place is also to be included and he hopes that it will be signed as soon as the governor arrives.

Junaid Ali Shah further said that currently the Sindh Assembly is not in existence, therefore the ordinance is being brought, now the task of the incoming assembly is to pass this bill and make it a law within 90 days of being elected.

He said that this ordinance will be implemented in the next 10 days, following which an awareness campaign will be conducted.

When Independent Urdu contacted director Nadeem Baig to find out the opinion of people associated with this industry regarding this law, he appreciated the proposal and declared it mandatory.

Nadeem Baig has directed popular dramas and films like ‘Mere Paas Tum Ho’.

“It’s great that it’s been legislated and not left up to each person’s individual style,” he said. It is considered as child labor to take leave of children, so the government has taken a very good step.’

Nadeem Baig said that as far as he is concerned, he already cares a lot regarding ‘like Sheth (Drama Mere Paas Tum Ho Ka Rumi) when he was working with us, he used to come only following school. And he used to do his homework on the set too, but not every movie or drama set does that, so the law was necessary.’

Nadeem Baig said that for the safety of the children but also for the safety of all the artists, a police station should be posted from the local police station, as there have been some unfortunate incidents.

Drama Mere Paas Tum Ho Ke Rumi or Sheth Sajjad Gul, when contacted by Independent Urdu and asked what he says as an artist, he said that not working during school hours is very beneficial because then studying is also the right way. And exams are also given properly.

Regarding working late at night, he said that if the work has started early in the morning and continues late at night, then there is pain, but if the work has started late, then the problem is late at night. It doesn’t happen.

In this regard, Sheeth’s father Sajjad Gul known as Saji while talking to Independent Urdu said that if you look at the problems, there is a problem of shooting during school time but at the same time, it often happens that the time of annual exams. Babies are held at the breast which causes severe stress for them.

‘Drama shoots are still taken care of, but when commercials are shot, they often work 24 hours a day to finish the whole thing in one day. In cases where children are brought in as extras, they become so bad that they sit for a whole day for one scene.’

Saji said that those who are assistant or associate directors, they do not think regarding the comfort of the children, rather they neglect the child in the process of finishing the work of the big names quickly.

‘Kids are usually in small roles, so they’re made to wait a long time, which makes them very tired.’

Saji said that Nadeem Baig had taken good care of Sheth in Mere Tum Ho Mein, had kept a room for him where he might sleep, but often children are not taken care of on the set, so this law is very important. which will protect the rights of children.
