Since 1990, cancer cases have doubled in France

This is a worrying finding that was relayed by Santé Publique France. In 30 years, cases of cancer have exploded, in both sexes.

Santé Publique France regularly conducts surveys related to the evolution of health the French. His latest was shared in the July 4 edition of their weekly epidemiological bulletin. And it deals with a very worrying subject: the evolution of cancers in France over the past 30 years.

The researchers identified the cases observed in both women and men between 1990 and 2023. However, it appears that cases have doubled over this same period. Even more disturbing: a 104% increase in cases was recorded in female patients. And this concerns in a quasi-equivalent way all the regions of the hexagon.

Lungs, breasts and prostate among the most affected body parts

The survey reveals that even today, the most frequent cancers are those of the breast, the prostate and the lungs. However, the numbers are different by gender. While men are now less affected by lung cancer, cases are more numerous among women.

While some diseases depend on genetic factors, researchers also point to bad habits such as smoking. Indeed, cigarettes are partly responsible for the development of tumors in the lip-mouth-pharynx, esophagus, lungs or even the bladder.

Certain cancers better managed today thanks to early detection

Nevertheless, the figures also testify to the reduction of certain diseases following innovations and discoveries. Thus, the investigation reveals that fewer thyroid cancers since 2016. In addition, the emphasis placed on prevention campaigns and early detection allows for more appropriate treatment and remissions.

Despite dedicated actions and campaigns, some diseases continue to soar. This is particularly the case for kidney cancer and pancreatic cancer. However, this is currently due to poor knowledge of the risks. Indeed, the researchers explained in the survey that these can be very numerous and difficult to detect. Among other things, obesity, diabetes or smoking are among the assumptions.

In fact, researchers still need to deepen their knowledge to better care for patients. Changing bad habits through generalized actions would also limit the risks, for both men and women.
