Last menu of the summer before the start of the school year (and it’s already started for some)!

We’re once again stocking up on beautiful local fruits and vegetables while there’s plenty. And speaking of fruits from Quebec, fall strawberry season is already in full swing and at $2.44 a liter basket at Maxi, it’s definitely worth stocking up. You will probably have noticed it, but the baskets have shrunk this year (we are now talking about 750 ml)… except at Maxi and Provigo, so we have a good quantity-price ratio.

Fall strawberries are in full swing from August until the first frosts, usually in October. Their plants are growing very well despite the increasingly cold days and their fruits are very red and sweet (and often even quite large). These fall varieties offer us the chance to enjoy this little local treasure even longer and it’s always a good idea to take advantage of a good discount to stock up on winter and spring.

The best thing is in my opinion again and again freezing! We wash and dry the strawberries well, we hull them, we cut them (or not), then we freeze them ideally flat on a plate before transferring them to a bag or a freezer container. The plate step helps prevent them from turning into a big block of ice and makes them easier to use afterwards. Remember to use a silicone mat if you have one: you will thank yourself for it when it comes time to take off the fruit!
