Qatil Shafai was born on 1919 in Haripur area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He started his artistic journey with the poetry of Pakistan’s first film “Teri Yaad”.
Qatil Shafai remained the ambassador of love throughout his life and the beautiful expression of emotions became his hallmark. Qatil Shafai is a big name in film songwriting.
In recognition of his technical services, he was awarded many honors including Pride of Performance and Naqosh Award by the Government of Pakistan.
Qatil Shafai started writing poetry at the age of 13 and his first collection Kalam Hariyali was published in 1942. He also wrote the songs of popular films like Naila, Naokar, Antar and Ishq Laila, which resonate even today in India apart from Pakistan.
Qatil Shafai composed more than 900 songs from 201 films. He was the first film lyricist of Pakistan who also got the honor of composing songs for Indian films.
Qatil Shafai’s poetry collections include Hariyali, Jal Tarang, Rozan, Jhumar, Parhan, Banyan, Shadows of Voices, Talk and others.
He was also the deputy editor of the late literary magazine “Adab Latif”. Hariyali, Jaltrang, Parahan, Ababil and Phawar are his famous works.
His poetry has also been translated into Chinese, Russian, English, Hindi and Gujarati languages. In 2001, Qatil Shafai left Bizm-i Yaran and left the mortal world.
