Thanks to research published in 2023, it will be easier to improve your health in 2024. This is what Géraldine Zamansky, journalist at Health Magazine on France 5, with some good resolutions.
franceinfo: Some discoveries show real effectiveness in feeling well, thanks to small changes?
Exactly. You may remember the one that we mentioned here: a reduction in cardiac risk from 3 minutes of daily activity leading to shortness of breath. By walking at a brisk pace or taking the stairs for example. Another more recent study shows a significant benefit obtained with just 5 minutes less spent without moving during the day. This result was achieved thanks to 15,000 volunteers who wore a motion sensor on their thigh 24 hours a day. They also carried out various medical examinations to evaluate their hearts and vessels. As a result, the simple fact of standing for a few minutes rather than sitting is already positive. And of course, it’s even better to take a few steps and move for longer.
More and more studies seem to show that it is toxic to stay for hours in a row at your desk or on your couch?
Indeed, the mere fact of reducing this sedentary lifestyle a little reduces its toxicity and improves health. Other researchers have shown in 2023 that getting up for one minute every hour already lowers blood pressure! This absolutely does not surprise Dr Nicolas Barizien, sports doctor at Foch hospital. He explains how lack of movement actually is harmful. In fact, staying in the same position for a long time creates a kind of microinjury to the ligaments and tendons. Because their good health, their “breathing” in a way, comes through movement. Otherwise, they suffer, and this triggers chronic inflammation. Dr Barizien therefore advises at least changing position every two hours.
For those who don’t have time or who hate sport, how else can you improve your health?
I’m not going to lie to you: beyond a few minutes of movement each day, managing to walk more would be even better. And here too 2023 has been generous with good news for those who are short of time, since several studies have broken the dogma of 10,000 steps per day. The heart feels better following 2,300 steps, or around twenty minutes on average. Then, each additional thousand steps further improves life expectancy. So, a few more steps on the ground in 2024 and a big step for your health!
