The eyewitness and winner of the Simon Wiesenthal Prize Zwi Nigal died in Israel at the age of 100. This was announced by the press service of the Parliamentary Directorate on Monday. Born in Vienna, he fled Austria at the age of 16 following the “Anschluss”, fought in the British army once morest Nazi Germany and later gave lectures at schools in Germany and Austria. In April he celebrated his 100th birthday.

Together with three other eyewitnesses, he received the Simon Wiesenthal Prize last year. “The Holocaust survivor and extraordinary contemporary witness was the 1st Simon Wiesenthal Prize winner of Parliament because of his tireless commitment to justice and a culture of remembrance,” said National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) in a broadcast. “May Zwi Nigal’s legacy help create a world of peace and tolerance.”
Zwi Nigal was born Hermann Heinz Engel in Vienna in 1923 and fled to Palestine in 1939. His mother arrived there five years later, his father was murdered in Auschwitz. Nigal joined the British Army at the age of 18 and fought as an infantryman in Italy during World War II. In 1946 he returned to Vienna as a British soldier and in 1948 he fought in the Israeli War of Independence. He served as a soldier for a total of 27 years, later switching to industry.
