There was no suspense… or almost. great favourite, Simon Mignolet a was elected Golden Shoe 2022. A just reward for the Brugeois who thus succeeds Paul Onuachu and becomes the 1st guardian acclaimed since Michel Preud’homme in 1989.
And for once, it’s hard to dispute the coronation of our Red Devil, as he ticks all the boxes this year. First, he was consistent and scored points in both laps, while most of his competitors capitalized on a single lap (Undav, Onuachu to name a few).
Then, he was the captain of a Bruges ship which allowed itself to defy all predictions in the Champions League, titillating with pleasure a few big players (Porto, Leverkusen, Atletico Madrid) to invite itself, a little general surprise, in the round of 16. Impassable for 4 matches before giving in, Mignolet has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the competition, making an impression at the best of times.
In short, this year, the coronation of Mignolet was almost indisputable. His title of Belgian champion last season is ultimately just one more argument to support his solid candidacy. He won with 684 points (by establishing a record differential compared to 2nd) and therefore very well ahead Casper Nielsen (233 points), brilliant last season with Union before giving in to the sirens of Bruges, and mike treasurewho capitalized on his excellent start to the season with Genk to move up the standings.
