“It was tighter than expected. The high jump thwarted my plans,” said the world champion in the SRF interview. The Swiss had to fight hard once more in the final 1000 m run. The cushion of 153 points or 14 seconds over challenger Sander Skotheim from Norway shrank threateningly to 11 points. Ehammer needed a clear personal best of 2:46.03 minutes to keep the unleashed Skotheim (2:33.23) at bay.

“My tactics ultimately brought me victory: run at my pace until 800 m and then just give it full throttle,” said Ehammer. In fact, he was temporarily in second place, but fought his way back to the top in the final sprint.
The Appenzeller opened the second day with a very strong 7.62 seconds in the 60 m hurdles. After that, he didn’t let anything go wrong in the pole vault. He cleared 5.20 m in his first attempt, following which he narrowly missed his personal best of 5.30 m. Ultimately, Ehammer managed his only weak performance on the second day, the 1.95 m in the high jump on Saturday , still compensate.

The 24-year-old added another medal to his palmarès following coming second as an all-around athlete at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade and the European Championships in Munich in 2022 and third as a long jumper at the World Championships in Eugene.
Thanks to Ehammer’s strong performance at the end, the Swiss national anthem was heard at an indoor World Championships for the fourth time: in 1991 in Seville thanks to shot putter Werner Günthör, in 1993 in Toronto following the victory of hurdle sprinter Julie Baumann and in 2022 in Belgrade following Mujinga Kambundji’s gold run over 60 m this had already been the case.
Kälin narrowly misses the coup
In the women’s all-rounder Annik Kälin missed the medal in the long jump specialists by just three centimeters. The 23-year-old from Grisons took 5th place.
After a failed attempt at the start, the Swiss made an improvement run that took her from 6.62 to 6.67 to 6.73 to 6.75 m. Ultimately, the women were only separated by 9 cm between 3rd and 7th place. With a little luck in the competition, the coup would have been possible.

The woman from Landquart has nothing to blame herself for. She can’t shake up the field in the long jump like Simon Ehammer can with the men, but her progress makes her a dangerous outsider. She demonstrated this impressively in Scotland. She came within a centimeter of the Swiss record she set two weeks ago.
Annik Kälin has already been successful on the international stage. In 2022 she won bronze in the heptathlon at the European Championships in Munich. But the year 2023 didn’t go as planned. Initially the start of the season was delayed due to a stress fracture in her left shin, then the athlete had to give up following two disciplines at the World Championships in Budapest due to an illness.
Annik Kälin is planning a double effort at the European Championships in Rome in June with the heptathlon and the long jump.

Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool remain on course for the championship – Darwin Nuñez shoots the Reds to victory late on. Meanwhile, Aston Villa continues to head towards the Champions League, while Chelsea doesn’t really seem to be getting on track.
For a long time it looked like a goalless draw, but in the end Premier League leaders Liverpool won. Substitute Darwin Nuñez scored the decisive goal in the 99th minute with a header from a cross from Alexis Mac Allister. This leaves Liverpool at least one point ahead of Manchester City, who face city rivals United on Sunday.
