The Compagnie du TransGuinéen (CTG) is celebrating its second anniversary. The opening ceremony took place on Monday, July 29, 2024 in Conakry, with the presence of national authorities and project partners.

The event not only marked an anniversary, but also the beginning of a new era for Guinea. “Simandou, a long-standing dream of generations, has finally become a reality, thanks to the vision of the President of the Republic, General Mamadi Doumbouya, and respect for the commitment of the industrial partners present here. Djiba Diakité, Chairman of the Strategic Monitoring Committee of the Simandou Project (Baowu), said:

To carry out this landmark project, the committee, led by Djiba Diakité, has established strong partnerships with world-renowned companies in their respective fields. Together they have created a unique ecosystem where everyone contributes their skills and expertise.
“Simandou will make a major contribution to the decarbonization of the global economy, thanks to the steel industry. In about 24 months, TransGuinean has laid the foundations for a profound transformation of our country. More than 100 kilometers of railway line have been built, with an estimated iron consumption to date of about 8 million tons, as well as an exceptional tunnel. Simandou represents an unprecedented opportunity for our country. Globally, Simandou will play a role in the decarbonization of industry and contribute to environmental protection,” explains Djiba Diakité.

For Minister Djiba Diakité, Simandou is more than just mining: “TransGuinean embodies the ambition of the President of the Republic to make Simandou a true bridge of prosperity. This infrastructure will provide transport services for passengers, goods and ores, benefiting the entire Guinean economy. This project, through local content, puts Guineans and local businesses at the heart of its development.”

On an educational level, the Simandou project offers advantages for the country’s future executives, as Minister Guiba Kouyate explains: “The new tax mechanism will ensure increased revenue for the State, but also for industrial partners. A large part of this revenue will be invested in education, thus investing in the future. 20% of the State revenues linked to TransGuinean and 7% to the mines, approved by the Head of State, will be earmarked for the education and training of future generations of Guineans.”

The Trans-Guinea Railway, which will traverse four regions of Guinea, is more than a simple means of transportation. It creates strong links between various socio-economic and cultural components, thus forming the foundation for Guinea’s prosperous future. This infrastructure will help increase mobility, promote connectivity and commerce, and boost economic development across the country. It will have a multiplier effect on local businesses, creating investment opportunities locally and regionally.

The CTG head beam installed in March last year

In March this year, the first bridge across the Guinea River was laid. Recently, the Simfer team completed the construction of a 327-foot bridge on the Simfer Railway Branch Line, which connects its mine to the future CTG route, five months ahead of schedule. All of these bridges are built for the future of CTG.

“All this progress brings us one step closer to the full realization of the Simandou project. I am particularly proud of what this co-development agreement has already allowed us to achieve for Guinea and Guinean people: strong local content, with nearly a billion dollars in contracts awarded to Guinean companies; strict environmental standards, allowing us to protect flora and fauna for future generations; ” said Lawrence Dechambenoit, Rio Tinto representative, at the ceremony.

Ms. Wu, Vice President of Baowu Resources, firmly believes that the project has opened up a new perspective for Guinea by realizing stakeholders’ vision for future generations, encouraging all partners to work closely together to achieve a common vision and create opportunities for future generations.

During the two days to celebrate this anniversary, the group will be moderated by national and international experts to better understand the challenges of the Simandou project.
