Vienna(OTS) –

The Vienna River, referred to as “Vienna”, flows through nine districts of Vienna, with a total length of about 15 kilometers. The course of the river plays an important role in this city of 2 million people. In the inner city, it is an important flood protection facility; in the outer city, extensive reclamation measures have been implemented in recent years, creating a green leisure oasis for animals and humans. Now, starting in autumn 2025, another section will be tackled: the 1.2-kilometre stretch of river between Brauhausbrücke and Zufferbrücke will be restored to its natural state – planning work has now begun. Corresponding planning services are on the agenda of the planning committee to be held on September 2.

“Restoring nature is very important in Vienna: both in the Leshin and Wienflas rivers – for many years we have been taking appropriate measures on a large scale to return nature to people, animals and plants. Outskirts of the Vienna River In particular, the popular local recreation area, the Winterthal Cycle Path along the river, establishes an important connection with the city of Vienna. Measures are now planned along more than one kilometer of the river and we will ensure this unique recreation. Oasis is more attractive.

“Good progress is again being made on the restoration and reconstruction of the Vienna River, which has huge benefits for people and nature! I look forward to this project and many other restoration and reconstruction projects in Vienna. Some projects are already concrete, while others Conditions are being created so that we can bring more nature into cities for future generations, says Angelika Pipal-Leixner, environment spokesperson for NEOS Vienna. “

Natural planting and improved fish passages

The redesign work between Brauhausbrücke and Zufferbrücke is linked to the area of the Vienna River that has been restored to nature. The painstakingly constructed riverbeds are being dismantled, the channels are being widened and the banks are being upgraded with typical aquatic plants.

“In the restoration plan of the Vienna River, special attention is also paid to improving fish passages. Through compensation gradients, fish can also settle in this natural environment and find suitable spawning places,” said Gerald, head of the Vienna Water Department. Gerald Loew is delighted with the upcoming plans. District leader Michaela Schüchner is also a fan of the Vienna River and is delighted with the further upgrade: “The people of Penzin appreciate the leisure oasis on the Vienna River and as a cyclist I have enjoyed the uniqueness of the Vienna Valley cycle path for many years.”

Innovative pilot project: Implementing a green wall on the Vienna River

The City of Vienna is continuously planning measures to support the scenic and ecological quality of the Vienna River without compromising flood protection. Depending on the location, planning restoration measures for the Vienna River requires very specific expertise.

Recently, as part of a pilot program Neville Bridge and Wackenrode Bridge The historic Vienna River Wall limits the waterway in the city center and provides greening. Wild vines and climbers grow for approximately 300 metres. These plants not only attract the eye, they also prevent the stone walls from heating up and have a positive impact on the microclimate.
