Top connection from Pötzleinsdorf to the traffic belt – 19 new trees – more space on the sidewalk – structure to be completed by the end of 2024

Vienna(OTS) More trees, more sidewalk space and a higher quality of accommodation – this is what the climate-friendly Währinger Straße from Gersthofer Straße to Aumannplatz will bring in the future. The highlight of the redesign is the new, structurally separated cycle path, which is connected to the existing cycle path, thus ensuring safe travel from Pötzleinsdorf to Gurtel in the future! Planning Councilor Ulli Sima together on weekends Regional leader Sylvia Nosek and Angelika Pipal-Leixner, spokesperson for NEOS Vienna Tourism A signal was given to begin the redesign. Starting from the section along the Hans Radel School, a two-way bicycle lane is currently being constructed. Here we take advantage of the summer vacation to get things flowing once more before school starts. The entire connection from Gersthof to Aumannplatz should be structurally completed by the end of this year!

“For me, this project is one of the many highlights of our construction program this year. Our cycling offensive is in full swing and once more this year we are implementing around 50 projects and 20 kilometers of new cycling infrastructure. Since the start of the offensive, A lot is happening in Währing, and with the opening of the new cycle path from Gersthof to Aumannplatz, we are now closing the central gap in the Währing cycle path network. “What makes me particularly happy is that in “Get Out.” Under the motto “Asphalt”, we are making this section of Währinger Straße climate-friendly, planting 19 new trees, flower beds, drinking fountains and seats, and improving the quality of accommodation for everyone,” says Sima.

Regional leader Silvia Nossek says: “This plan is the final cornerstone of making cycling through the Währing (from Pötzleinsdorfer Schloßpark to Gurtel) safe and attractive. If more and more people in Währing want to travel by bicycle in the future, I would be delighted. I am delighted that the formerly gray area of Wallinger Street will become greener in the future.

“The construction of this structurally separated cycle path will soon allow people to enjoy a pleasant and safe cycle on this previously very unpleasant route. For everyone who wants to get from Pötzleinsdorf and Gersthof to the inner city , closing the gap are both ideal, healthy and climate-friendly.

Safe new bicycle connections will be available via Währing by the end of the year

The entire connected structure is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, with remaining work such as floor markings to be completed in spring 2025. While the cycle path is being constructed along the Hans-Radl-Schulde, it will also be implemented under the S45 bridge between Simonygasse and Gersthofer Straße. There will be two one-way bike lanes here. Next is the section between Paulinengasse and Aumannplatz. A structurally separate two-way cycle lane will also be created here. The 520 m long connection between Aumannplatz and Gersthof will be completed by the end of this year. Währing will then provide safe cycle lanes for cyclists and many new bicycle parking facilities.

Since autumn 2022, cyclists have been traveling along the new cycle lanes on Pötzleinsdorfer Straße and Gersthofer Straße and along the traffic-calmed cycle routes Erndtgasse, Hockegasse, Alsegger Straße and Thimiggasse to Gersthof train station. Starting from the Bel district, Schulgasse to Martinstrasse will become bicycle-friendly in 2023, as will the subsequent section from Martinstrasse to Klostergasse and on to Aumannplatz. Now the last gap between Aumannplatz and Gersthof will be closed, creating the final stretch of a continuous, attractive and safe radial connection for bicycle traffic in Währing.

Get rid of asphalt: new trees and wider sidewalks

Those who walk in Währing can also look forward to the fact that they will have more space in the future. Seating furniture and water fountains along the way provide opportunities to rest and cool down. Walking becomes more attractive by moving parked cars off sidewalks and adding new trees and green space. In line with the motto “Get Off the Asphalt”, 19 new trees will be planted along the street as part of the renovation project. Währinger Straße 188 – 190 Existing trees along the community buildings will be connected to continuous greenery. An attractive seating area was created with new trees, paving, seating and a water fountain in front of the community building’s entrance area.

New transport organization creates space for cycling and walking

In order to provide the necessary cycle lanes and green space, car traffic on the Währinger Straße between Aumannplatz and Gersthof will in future be made one-way into the city. Along the footpath out of town, a two-way cycle lane will be constructed, followed by longitudinal parking provisions in tree locations, a lane for car traffic, longitudinal parking provisions once more in tree locations, and then the pavement on the left. To optimize driving in Grätzl, the one-way Weinhauser Gasse and Köhlergasse between Währinger Straße and Gentzgasse will be reversed. On the S45 bridge, the two directions will be separated and a one-way cycle lane created under the bridge. In order to cycle directly out of the city into Thimiggasse and thus into the traffic-calmed Gersthofer street network, the one-way Thimiggasse will also be opened to bicycle traffic in both directions in this section – this already applies to the rest of Thimiggasse.

Vienna’s bike lane offensive

The Vienna Bike Path Offensive is now in its third year and continues at full steam! About 50 projects are launched every year to create 20 kilometers of new cycle paths. The city invests around €20 million a year as part of a major cycle offensive, with investment reaching a record €35 million last year. The focus of the offense is to close important gaps and establish new, continuous loop links.
