Start construction work for beach volleyball EM – From 2.-6. August is the sports highlight on the stage

Vienna (OTS) – For Viennese beach volleyball fans it’s this year again: The island is calling! After a break of several years on the island, the city’s largest summer sports event is returning to its original venue, Vienna’s Danube Island. The preparatory and construction work for the absolute sporting highlight has already started. From August 2nd, 64 teams will compete between Floridsdorfer and Brigittenauer Brücke for Europe’s beach volleyball crown. Island councilor Ulli Sima, sports councilor Peter Hacker and organizer Hannes Jagerhofer give the go-ahead for the construction of the beach arena.

“Danube Island Festival, beach volleyball championships and of course a free bathing resort for the Viennese: The Danube Island is proving itself to be a Viennese summer Mecca again this year! Many thanks to the employees of MA 45, who keep a cool head even in this hot phase of the year and who ensure that the island is in top condition every day,” said City Councilor Ulli Sima, who is responsible for the Danube Island, during a visit to the starting construction work. The venue is perfectly accessible by public transport with the U6, several rapid transit and bus lines.

“Beach volleyball in August has become a tradition on the Danube Island. Vienna is an internationally renowned sports metropolis. This is not only proven by the recent 3×3 basketball world championship, but now also the beach volleyball championship. This is how we manage to make top-class sport tangible for all Viennese. This is not only fun, but also motivates you to be physically active yourself. The structure symbolizes what defines our city: cohesion and cooperation. If it’s also fun and inspiring, you can’t go wrong. Many thanks to everyone involved, as a city councilor for sports, you can only be proud when such a mega event takes place in Vienna,” says city councilor Peter Hacker.

1,000 tons of sand for the highlight of the Viennese sports summer

Getting the mega sporting event to run smoothly is like a logistical masterpiece. By the beginning of August, 100 employees will be preparing the almost 50,000 m² event area for the expected rush of spectators. 1000 tons of sand are needed to turn the island section into a competitive beach volleyball facility.

On the largest sports stage of the tournament, the center court, up to 5,300 fans will ensure a relaxed atmosphere and the biggest sports party of the summer.

Of course, the strict nature conservation requirements of the Danube Island are observed. The island is not only a place of recreation for people, but also a habitat for many animals and plants in the middle of the metropolis and must therefore be treated with particular care. Here, too, the employees of the Vienna Waters are available to advise the organizers.

“After two great years on the Heumarkt, we had a very clear goal and a motto that also served as a driving force: Back to the Island,” says organizer Hannes Jagerhofer. “Now we can once again offer the best teams and the best fans the big stage they deserve.” Of course, memories would also come up of the fantastic 2017 World Cup and the major events in the two years that followed: “Just thinking about it and the imminent new edition as part of the European Championships proves our leitmotif: Goosebumps don’t lie! Our special thanks go to the City of Vienna. Thanks to their great support, we have found a home here that is the envy of the whole world.”

The course of the tournament is just as intense as the development program: 32 women’s and 32 men’s teams then play for EM gold and €100,000 in prize money over four competition days.
