Former A23 exit becomes a 60,000 m2 leisure paradise for sport and relaxation in the countryside – new cycle path and green connection

Vienna (OTS) Now it’s starting: Over the next few months, the city of Vienna will be creating a 60,000 m2 landscape park with public green and open spaces, sports facilities, water areas as well as footpaths and cycle paths from the “closed Simmering exit” that is well known throughout Austria from traffic radio. Comprehensive construction work will begin tomorrow, Monday, September 18th, and completion is scheduled for the end of summer 2024. “With this project we have achieved a real prime example of our “Get out of the asphalt” strategy. Instead of a concrete, unused motorway exit, there will be a thriving landscape park with sports and leisure opportunities in the future,” says planning councilor Ulli Sima, looking forward to the implementation. At the same time, a real green corridor will be created over 3 kilometers from Helmut Zilk Park via the Kempelenpark urban development area to the large green areas in the southern area of favorites such as Laaer Wald and Löwygrube. New pedestrian and cycle paths also improve the connectivity of the neighboring residential areas.

ASFINAG dismantled the A 23 exit, which was never put into operation, between 2020 and 2022, the City of Vienna is leasing the space and is now starting to design the future Tangentenpark on the Ostbahn.

District leader Marcus Franz: “The landscape park brings favorites more green spaces, cooling water areas and a comprehensive new range of sports and leisure activities. From a pump track for cyclists and a calisthenics facility to the possibility of ball sports and a boules area for older people, the park creates a lot of quality of life for the residents right on their doorstep. An adventure playground for the little ones, a new dog zone and a gastronomic kiosk as a social meeting point round off the offer.”

Pathway for environmentally friendly mobility

In the future, well-developed, illuminated cycle and footpath connections will lead through the improved area. This will link the adjacent residential areas and also significantly improve the cycle route between Innerfavoriten, the main train station and the southern area of Favoriten as well as the adjacent 11th district.

Wide range of sports and leisure activities also on the tangent

The planning also focuses on play and sports opportunities, especially for young people. Ball and roller sports as well as selective activity offers invite you to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities: a pump track, a football and basketball court, table tennis, a boules court and a calisthenics area are planned. The spacious area will also include an adventure playground with a cable car and climbing frames, which offer important incentives, especially for younger children. Individual active points are planned in the forest areas. Parts of the play and sports area are located in the weather-protected space under the tangent and can therefore be used well even in bad weather.

A kiosk with gastronomic offerings should act as a communicative meeting point and distribution point at the intersection of the paths. An event area with the possibility of an open-air cinema is planned.

Cooling Elemente

In order to use the cooling effect of water surfaces and reduce the urban heat island effect in this area, a pond and a fountain playground are planned. The pond can create valuable biotopes. The water promenade offers space for strolling and picnicking.

More forest for the city

In addition to the important green connection between Innerfavoriten and the new landscape park, the forest areas also make an active contribution to climate protection: In addition to the preservation of existing forest areas, other areas are generously greened and reforested in order to spatially combine the forest areas on the area.

Tree plantings in the form of groves between the forest areas and the sports areas, including picnic areas, are further features of the contemporary architecture in the landscape park. ASFINAG is building a photovoltaic system on the site.

The new landscape park is also a result of the district development concept “Südraum Favoriten”, as part of which one of the largest citizen participation processes in recent years took place.

Story regarding the closed Simmering exit

The A23 Simmering exit, also known as the Arsenal junction, was built in 1977 in the Quellestrasse area and was intended to connect the A3 southeast motorway with the southeast tangent. It was never completed and therefore never put into operation. In the meantime, consideration was given to activating the junction for a federal road (B225) that would run along the Eastern Railway. However, these plans were not pursued either. The junction that had already been built was only used as an entrance and exit for emergency vehicles. The complex demolition work on the ramps by ASFINAG was completed in 2022.
