Important cycle connection with greenery – completion of the first part by the end of the year
Vienna (OTS) – It’s starting! Pfeilgasse in the 8th district will become a climate-friendly bicycle street – with lots of greenery, cooling measures and traffic calming. In addition to new trees, large-scale unsealing, seating and drinking fountains, a high-quality cycle connection to the west will be created. With today’s groundbreaking ceremony, Mobility City Councilor Ulli Sima and District Manager Martin Fabisch gave the starting signal for the renovation work of Part 1 – specifically from the Lerchenfelder Belt to Strozzigasse. Next year will see the redesign of Strozzigasse to the so-called 2er line, thus completing an attractive cycle connection to the city center over a length of 1.2 kilometers. The middle section around the school forecourt was made attractive and greened last year.
“The focus of our major cycle path offensive is on high-quality cross-connections and closing gaps in the cycle path network. I am very pleased that we will soon be able to offer a comfortable connection across the entire 8th district – around 1.2 km in total! With this bicycle street in Pfeilgasse, we are massively improving the cycling infrastructure in Josefstadt, which is densely built-up and leaves little space for cycle paths! And of course we are using the project to provide more greenery and new trees and to improve the quality of stay for pedestrians – just like we did last year in the school area on Pfeilgasse, where colorful plant beds are already blooming and trees provide shade “Sima emphasizes.
“The new Pfeilgasse cycle axis will create an attractive, comfortable and safe connection for cyclists between the belt and the center. In this year’s construction phase alone, which extends from the Lerchenfelder Belt to Strozzigasse, we will plant 16 new trees, create several micro-open spaces and set up seating – in addition to cyclists, pedestrians and residents who will benefit from the redesign of Pfeilgasse You will find a climatically suitable Pfeilgasse with a high quality of stay. This means we can prepare sustainably for the effects of climate change!” says district leader Martin Fabisch.
Climate-friendly Pfeilgasse: More space and traffic safety
The Pfeilgasse becomes a cycling and leisure oasis. Central measures of the climate-friendly redesign: The previously relatively narrow sidewalks will largely be widened to 2.5 meters and provided with permeable paving. The existing diagonal parking regulations will be replaced by parallel parking regulations, and the parking lane will also be unsealed here by paving. The new street cross-section creates the best conditions for a high-quality bicycle street. Bicycle street means: The roadway is primarily intended for bicycle traffic; car drivers must be considerate of cyclists who are also allowed to ride next to each other here.
Cyclists can travel in both directions in this section; motorized traffic is only allowed to drive into the city center, as before. The upper part of Pfeilgasse, the section between the Belt and Blind Lane, will be completely car-free. Cyclists will have access to a 3.30 meter wide two-way cycle path.
16 new trees for a better microclimate – 1,700 m2 unsealed
Everyone in Grätzl should benefit from more greenery in the street space, more space for walking and more quality of stay: 16 new trees will be added to the 12 existing trees, all tree sections will be planted with colorful perennials and automatically watered. Street lighting will also be adapted. Three drinking fountains provide additional refreshment during the hot summer months and 15 non-consumption seating areas further enhance the Grätzl. A total of around 1,700 square meters of area in Pfeilgasse will be unsealed through greening or paving.
The school environment Pfeilgasse and Lisette-Model-Platz have already been redesigned
Last year, the school forecourt in Pfeilgasse, including the Lisette Model Square, was redesigned and made climate-friendly together with the district under the motto “Get out of the asphalt”: a teacher’s parking lot was turned into a cool open space. 9 trees, seating, large shrubs, 6 new green areas with colorful flowers and a water feature with ground fountains now provide more shade and cooling around the school.
The cycle path in the school area has already been adapted as part of the space design and now offers more safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The three meter wide two-way cycle path was designed so that there is sufficient distance from the sidewalk that leads to the school on the northern side of Pfeilgasse.
Current construction phase completed by the end of the year
Now the redesign follows from the Lerchenfelder Belt to Strozzigasse. The section will be closed to cars and motorcycles for the construction period from Monday, September 18th to the end of December 2023, and access to the approved parking spaces will be maintained. Preparatory work for the construction site facilities is currently underway. From September 18th to mid-October 2023, a 4-meter-wide walking and cycling path will be in place.
Detour for cyclists from mid-October
From mid-October to the end of December 2023 there will only be one sidewalk, then bicycle traffic will also be rerouted. The cycle path leads out of town via Zeltgasse-Piaristengasse-Florianigasse-Uhlplatz-Lerchenfelder Belt cycle path. Towards the city you cycle along the Lerchenfelder Belt-Uhlplatz-Florianigasse-Lederergasse-Strozzigasse-Zeltgasse cycle path. There will be sufficient information signs on site.
Part 2 of the cycle connection is expected to start in spring 2024 from Strozzigasse – along Zeltgasse and Josefsgasse – to the so-called 2er line. By the end of 2024, the entire Pfeilgasse should be redesigned as a bicycle street, including greenery and cooling, and should further increase the quality of life in the city.
