After a thorough examination, the City of Vienna releases further locations – intersections are already signposted

Vienna (OTS) Big bang for Vienna’s cyclists: The city of Vienna has now released a total of more than 170 locations where it is now possible to continue cycling on red! The locations have already been signposted – from now on, following a short stop, you can turn right there even on red. The offer for faster progress was thus rolled out extensively. “I am pleased that we can offer Vienna’s cyclists this opportunity so quickly and on such a large scale – we are pioneers nationwide! Together with the further consistent expansion of the cycle paths, in which we are once more investing more than 25 million euros this year, turning right on red makes cycling in Vienna even more attractive, because it reduces waiting times and ensures rapid progress!” Mobility Councilor Ulli Sima.

Locations thoroughly checked

The safety of all road users is a priority for the city. The locations proposed by the magistrate, the population and the districts were examined in detail in advance by MA 46 – traffic organization and technical traffic matters. As early as October, immediately following the new StVO came into force, Vienna had already made it possible to turn right on red at 10 of the first locations. In particular, routes where there are cycle lanes before and following the turn were selected for turning right on red – i.e. you turn from one cycle path into another – and conflicts are thus reduced.

Good offer for Vienna’s cyclists

“The Viennese are increasingly using their bikes on a daily basis. I am sure that the green arrow is well used by cyclists and also works in Vienna. The experiences with the already prescribed locations already show that. It is important that following a short stop before continuing, you make sure that you are not endangering yourself or others – here it is important to be particularly considerate of pedestrians,” emphasizes Vienna’s cycling officer Martin Blum.
