SilverStone has released the SST-ECM28 PCIe expansion card, which is equipped with two slots for installing M.2 SSDs. The novelty may appeal to owners of older motherboards or those who would just like to add additional M.2 slots to their system.
The SilverStone SST-ECM28 expansion card is double-sided. On the one hand, it is equipped with an M.2 connector with an M-key for an NVMe drive.
On the other side is a B-keyed M.2 designed for a SATA (6Gb/s) SSD. In the latter case, the use of a SATA cable is required. One side of it connects to the back of the expansion card, the other to the SATA connector on the motherboard.
New from SilverStone is not the first PCIe expansion card to offer support for two SSDs. However, perhaps it is the most compact of them. The disadvantages of the SST-ECM28 are the lack of a mounting bracket, as well as the fact that the expansion card itself occupies a PCIe x16 slot. For fastening, it uses a special “hook”, which is held by the motherboard’s locking mechanism. At the same time, SST-ECM28 uses only 4 lanes of the PCIe interface. The latter, however, allows you to install it in a PCIe x4 slot, but in this case there is a risk of it falling out, for example, when transporting the system unit.
The SilverStone SST-ECM28 supports M.2 SATA and NVMe SSDs from 2230 to 2280.
On its official website, the manufacturer specified SSD modelsthat have been tested for compatibility with the expansion card. The company did not indicate the cost of new items.
