In a hard-fought final, committed Hungarians narrowly lost to Favorit USA 7-8 (2-3, 2-2, 1-0, 2-3) and thus sensationally won silver at the World Championships in Doha.
On Tuesday, the spotlight was still on the men’s selection, which went into the race once morest France as defending champions. The team managed to stay in the lead until the last quarter, before 3:30 minutes. The French only managed to equalize shortly before the end, then they surprisingly turned the game around and threw the defending champions Hungary out of the race. The next defeat followed once morest Serbia, so that the Hungarians might only reach 7th place with the final win once morest Montenegro.
From then on, all hopes rested on women
After the men’s selection was eliminated, all attention turned to the women’s national team, which made it to the final with an excellent performance. On Friday followingnoon they wanted to create a sensation with a win once morest the USA. However, the United States players started worthy of favorites and took a furious 3-goal lead. After that, the Hungarian players finally found their way into the game and reduced the score to 2-3 by the end of the first quarter.
The first goal in the second quarter also went to the USA. After a double majority situation on the Hungarian side, the quick goal followed. After the 3-5, the Hungarian coaches decided to change the goalkeeper. Apparently irritated, the USA players hit the post several times, allowing Hungary to reduce the score to 4-5.
Tangible dream made you nervous
In the penultimate quarter, the goalkeepers on both sides made excellent saves before Hungary was able to equalize for the first time since the start of the game. The Hungarians were noticeably nervous in the last quarter, as they gave the ball away to their opponents through inaccuracies in many promising moves. The USA once once more scored three goals in a row without mercy. In the final minutes, Hungary rose once more and scored two goals. One of these goals was scored by Rita Keszthelyi, who was named MVP following the tournament. With the last attack, an equalizer would have been possible, but the Hungarians hoped in vain for a penalty in a contentious scene – the USA’s victory was now a fact.
“Of course it’s painful to lose like that because you don’t often get the opportunity to win a World Cup. But we didn’t lose, the USA won thanks to a strong performance,” analyzed coach Attila Mihók following the final whistle.
