Early on Tuesday, June 24, 1941, Pepi’s father Josef Andersch was arrested at home by plainclothes Gestapo officers. Pepi was seven years old and up to that point knew little regarding his father’s activities in the resistance. His father was the cashier of a KPÖ operating cell at Fiat in Vienna and encouraged employees to oppose the war with an excerpt from a poem by Erich Weinert (“If you march east one day…”).
