“Silent” glaucoma that causes no symptoms

Glaucoma, also known as the “silent thief of sight”, is one of the most “insidious” eye diseases, precisely because in its initial stages it does not cause any symptoms.

If not detected and diagnosed in time, it is capable of causing catastrophic damage to vision.

The tonometry examination, for the accurate measurement of intraocular pressure, is very easy, takes only a few seconds and is recommended for everyone, at regular intervals.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) guidelines recommend that people with no known risk factors for glaucoma be screened every 5-10 years under the age of 40. Thereafter they should be examined with increasing frequency, namely at ages 40-54 every 2 to 4 years, but after age 65 every 1 or 2 years.

Those with risk factors for developing glaucoma (eg family history) are recommended to be screened every 2-5 years before the age of 40. After 40 years they should be checked every 1-3 years and after 55 years every 1-2 years.

“Prevention is extremely important, it is essentially the cornerstone of modern medical intervention and undoubtedly a key component in what we call quality of life. For a number of critical eye diseases such as glaucoma, retinal diseases, age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, keratoconus, etc. a routine preventive eye exam is not just a procedure, but a -commitment- to you and your eye health.

Regardless of family history and other risk factors, preventive vision screening must begin very early in life (from the age of 2), so that any problems that may reduce or threaten it can be detected in time,” emphasized Lambros Lambrogiannis , ophthalmologist surgeon at the Ophthalmica Institute specializing in Pediatric Ophthalmology.

For his part, Miltos Balidis, an ophthalmic surgeon at the Ophthalmica Institute specializing in corneal and anterior hemisphere surgery, pointed out that “in our country, most people rush to the ophthalmologist only when their vision has decreased significantly, however preventive checks as well as periodic re-checks, based on specific schedules and protocols are deemed necessary, especially when the visual demands of modern life increase and are constantly triggered.

Taking into account that every 5 minutes a person loses his sight and staying focused on the meaning of today, we pledge not to stop spreading that a timely and valid diagnosis through a simple check up, is truly invaluable for the armor of the most precious of all senses”.
