Six prisoners who were involved in the murder of anti-corruption presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio They were murdered in the last hours in a prison in the province of Guayas, in Ecuador, in a suspicious event that the penitentiary agency of that country limited itself to reporting, without giving details on the subject.
As is known, Villavicencio was shot dead while leaving a rally for his electoral campaign days before the first round in August, in the midst of a wave of violence that the outgoing president Guillermo Lasso attributed to the dispute between gangs related to the drug trafficking.
That same night of the murder, the police arrested to six people of Colombian nationality for an investigationwhile another subject died in the confrontation and later the prosecution linked new suspects to the case.
However, six of those detainees died this Friday in the prison known as Litoral Penitentiary, located in Guayaquil, and considered one of the most dangerous in the country, where criminal gangs vie for control and power.
“All the PPL (persons deprived of liberty) are of Colombian nationality and were accused of the murder of the former presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio,” the SNAI prison agency said in a statement.
President Lasso was quick to quickly condemn the prisoners’ crime. “Neither complicity nor cover-up, here the truth will be known,” he said on platform X, formerly known as Twitter, when reporting that he arranged a meeting of the security cabinet.
The presidential candidates, businessman Daniel Noboa and leftist politician Luisa González, who will face each other in a runoff on October 15, condemned the death of the prisoners linked to the case.
“We demand that the National Government, on behalf of a majority of citizens who want change in search of better days, report the details of the events that occurred today”Noboa, who is leading the latest polls, said in a statement. “How might we allow the empowerment of violence that has plunged the entire country into terror and uncertainty?”
For her part, González, a protégé of former president Rafael Correa, wrote on platform “without allowing this clear strategy of terror to stop us.”
