What is type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system destroys the beta cells of the pancreas responsible for the production of insulin – a hormone necessary to regulate blood glucose levels.

As a result, the body stops producing insulin or produces insufficient amounts of it. Glucose, instead of reaching the cells, accumulates in the blood, leading to hyperglycemia.

Although the exact cause is not fully understood, it is known that a combination of genetic and environmental factors are responsible for the development of type 1 diabetes.

Symptoms of type 1 diabetes to:

  • excessive thirst,
  • frequent urination,
  • sudden and unintentional weight loss,
  • fatigue and weakness,
  • vision problems (blurred image),
  • recurrent infections, e.g. of the skin or urinary tract.

The basis of treatment for type 1 diabetes is the administration of insulinbecause the patient’s body does not produce it on its own. The hormone is delivered by injection or via an insulin pump. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, a healthy diet and regular physical activity are also important.
