According to the Sikh community based in London, the purpose of hoisting the Khalistan flag by taking down the Indian flag at the Indian High Commission is to protest against the arrest of Amrit Pal Singh, a supporter of the Khalistan movement in Indian Punjab and his 6 colleagues, and the referendum on Khalistan in Australia. It was an expression of solidarity. Australia is voting on Khalistan today.
On the incident, the Indian government summoned the British Deputy High Commissioner posted in Delhi and registered a strong protest.
The Sikh organization Dil Khalsa took responsibility for taking down the Indian flag and putting up the Khalistan flag while the police arrested a Dil Khalsa worker.
