Diet plays a vital role in our health thanks to the essential nutrients that certain foods contain.
And if you don’t stick to a well-balanced diet, it can be easy to become deficient in some vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients.
Omega-3 is an “essential” nutrient that has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, according to one expert.
With that in mind, Justine Butler, head of research at Viva, revealed some of the signs of an omega-3 deficiency, saying, “Omega-3 fatty acids are an essential part of our cell membranes, are a key component of many hormones and help regulate inflammation. We use Inflammation is a defense mechanism to protect our bodies from infections and injuries, but excessive consumption of it can cause chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and some types of cancer.”
She added: “It can also reduce the buildup of fatty plaques in the blood vessels, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, and has a proven effect on heart rate.”
Symptoms of omega 3 deficiency
Butler warns of three symptoms on the skin that might indicate an omega-3 deficiency:
dry skin
Skin roughness
– Dandruff
However, there are other signs of a low omega-3 level, including brittle nails, headaches, and stomachaches.
Butler explained that we don’t need a lot of omega-3 fats in the diet, but a little is essential. Omega-3 fats are important for brain function, and low intakes may have negative effects on behavior, learning, and mood.”
Low omega-3s are associated with behavioral problems such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, anxiety, sleep problems, and learning disabilities in some children.
Omega 3 sources
Foods rich in omega-3 include:
Oily fish
Flaxseed
Chia seeds
– Walnuts
– soybean
