ALGIERS – The Sonatrach Group signed on Thursday in Algiers a contract with the China Petroleum Engineering and Construction Corporation (CPECC) to build a new booster unit at the Alrar gas field in the Illizi basin, thus compensating for the natural drop in pressure and maintaining the field’s production at 10 million cubic meters per day.

The contract, worth $210 million, including 7 billion Algerian dinars, was signed by Rachid Hachichi, CEO of Algeria’s National Oil Company, and Zheng Xiang, Executive President of CPECC Algeria.

The project includes the EPC construction of three compressor trains, the modification of the intake manifold and separation manifold, the installation of booster pumps and the connection to the existing units. It also includes the expansion of the fire protection network, anti-intrusion and remote monitoring systems.

The contract also includes construction of the substation and upgrading of the existing Integrated Control and Safety System (ICSS).

The new unit will be completed in 32 months and is scheduled to be operational by the end of the second quarter of 2027.

In his speech, Mr Hachiko stressed that the project demonstrates the national oil company’s “determination” and “commitment” to continue investing in upstream gas to meet the growing demand in the domestic market.

He added that the project will enable the group to manage natural depressions in the Alrar gas field, which it has operated since 1984, and continue to produce gas.

The manager said it also enables the national oil company to “fulfill its commercial commitments to international clients where Algeria is a major player”.

The Sonatrach CEO also expressed his confidence in CPECC’s ability to carry out the project while adhering to deadlines, costs, quality, and prevailing safety and environmental standards.
