ALGIERS – The Minister of Transport, Youcef Cherfa, signed Monday in Algiers with his Cameroonian counterpart, Jean Ernest Masséna, a framework agreement for cooperation in the field of transport and meteorology, aimed at establishing a framework for cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the research, knowledge exchange and training segments.
Cherfa, who received the Cameroonian minister in audience before the signing of the framework agreement, indicated that the latter comes two years following the signing of an agreement between the two countries for the opening of an air line between the Algeria and Cameroon and to make Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers a hub linking Cameroonian airports to those of Europe.
For his part, the Cameroonian Minister, who is leading a large delegation, declared that his visit to Algeria “is the materialization of a wish of our two Heads of State, who wished that the cooperation which has existed since the 1970s between both countries be strengthened”.
“This cooperation has evolved over the years to see the beginning of a concrete expression with the signing in 2021 of an air agreement”, he noted, stressing that his visit “strengthens this cooperation in all the transport sectors (air, sea, rail and road)”.
Mr. Masséna, who said he was “satisfied” with the signing of this framework agreement, noted that the particularity of the latter “is to support cooperation through national meteorology”.
According to the signed document, consulted by the APS, this framework agreement aims to “establish a framework of cooperation between the two parties in the field of transport and meteorology, on the basis of equality, mutual interest and in compliance with the laws and regulations in force in both countries, as well as the supervision of cooperation between the institutions of the two parties in their respective fields”.
Among the areas of cooperation of this framework agreement are the establishment of a legal framework that can strengthen trade between the two countries, particularly in the areas of air and maritime transport and the encouragement of the establishment of cooperation between transport and meteorological research and training institutes.
The agreement also includes the training of students and the supervision of trainers in the field of transport and meteorology and the exchange of experience and expertise between the regulatory and supervisory structures in the transport sectors of the two countries, particularly in the air and maritime domains.
The document also provides for the carrying out of missions or stays of experts in the two countries, as well as the organization of training courses for the benefit of students and trainees, and also the exchange of knowledge in the field of transport and meteorology.
During its visit to Algeria, the Cameroonian ministerial delegation will visit several institutions in the sector, in particular the maintenance center and its various workshops belonging to Air Algérie, as well as the National Office of Meteorology.
